Beware of harmful effect of plastic pollution by health professional
A heath professional at the Adeyemi Federal University of
Education (AFUED) Ondo, Health Center, Mrs. Abosede Dare, has advised people against excessive use of plastic materials, saying the move would help in safeguarding their health, and reduce pollution in the environment.
Dare, a Deputy Director of Nursing Service, AFUED, gave the advice while delivering a speech at the event organised by the University to celebrate year 2025 World Environment Day, which held in the institution on Thursday 5 June, 2025.
Speaking on the theme of the event “Beat Plastic Pollution”, the health professional expressed serious concern about what she described as excessive use of plastic materials in contemporary society and its improper disposal, stating that if the practice is not checked, society may be exposed to danger.
Abosede, commended members of the University Environmental Sanitation Committee, for joining other people across the World, to celebrate this year World Environment Day, stating that the move would help in creating awareness on dangers inherent in the use of plastic, and educate people more of effect on the environment.
The Senior health professional also spoke on the need for people to take good care of their health, by eating good food and engage regularly in physical exercise.
In addition, she emphasized the importance of regular drinking of water, adequate sleep and abstinence from illicit drugs, which she said could shorten peoples’ life span.
Also in his remarks, the University Director of Medical Services, Dr. Adekunle Ekundayo Ogunmosin, spoke against excessive consumption of local medications and advised people to refrain from indiscriminate dumping of plastic materials in unauthorized places, saying the step would help in averting pollution.
Meanwhile, the Acting Vice Chancellor, Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED) Ondo, Prof. Samuel Akintunde, has commended members of the University’s Environmental Sanitation Committee (UESC) for their contributions to the development of the institution in the areas of promoting cleanless and effective waste management.
Addressing the UESC members and sanitation workers during the celebration of year 2025 World Environment Day in the University, the institution’s Acting Administrator urged them not to relent in the discharge of their duties. He reiterated commitment of his administration to their welfare and gave assurance that Management of the Institution would continue to give attention to their needs.
Responding, the Chairman UESC, Dr. Abdulrasheed Oloyede, expressed appreciation to Management of the University for providing necessary financial support and creating favourable environment which allows peace to thrive in the institution.
The programme held with fanfare at the Olusegun Obasanjo Auditorium in the University was attended by important personalities from within and outside the institution.
