AFUED celebrates world environment day, task workers on campus neatness

The Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED) Ondo, has joined the rest of the world to celebrate the year 2026 Environment day.



The annual celebration, initiated by the United Nations in 1972, which usually holds on June 5 of every year, took place in the Republic of Azerbaijan on June 5, 2026, with primary focus on urgent climate action and the need to address global temperature increases.



In a remarks, while observing the day in the University on Friday June 5, 2026, and addressing sanitation workers in the institution, the Vice-Chancellor AFUED, Prof. Bayode Isaiah Popoola, represented by his Deputy, Prof. Ireti Folasade Alao, described the occasion as very important, and commended the sanitation workers for their efforts in ensuring cleanliness in the institution, and urged them to redoubles efforts in the task of keeping the University clean at all times.



The University Administrator reiterated the resolve of the institution's Management to continue to provide them with necessary resources, needed to do their work. He, therefore, charged them to continue to put in their best in the discharge of their duties, promising that his administration would address issues relating to their welfare.



Also in his remarks, the Director of Medical Services (DMS) AFUED, Dr. Ibukun-Ola Eddisson Johnson, stressed the need for people to protect the environment at all times, stating that the move have positive impact on the society.



The medical practitioner spoke against indiscriminate dumping of waste on the environment and reminded people the need to make effective use of waste disposal materials saying "if we handle the environment anyhow, the environment will do anyhow to us".



Commending the institution's sanitation workers for their contributions to promotion of good hygiene in the University, the AFUED DMS, also urged them not to relent in promoting the beautification of the University stating that the institution would look into their welfare and put smile on their faces in no distance times.



In a lecture presented on the occasion titled : "Cleaner Universities for a sustainable future" , a staff from AFUED Directorate of Medical Services, Department of Environmental Health, Mr. Osunniran Sunday David, emphasised the need for University environment to be clean at all times.



He listed what he identified as environmental challenges commonly noticed in campuses of some tertiary institutions in Nigeria , to include, problems associated with improper waste disposal, burning of plastic materials, poor sanitation, waste of energy, water as well as lack of awareness on matters relating to the environment.



As panacea, the environmental health specialist, enjoined all stakeholders within and outside the University system to partner with the University's Management in the task of promoting the achievement of clean and healthy environment, stating that the move enhance academic development and boost aesthetic outlook of institutions.



The colourful event, held with fanfare, also witnessed singing and dancing by the sanitation workers cladded in customized white and blue vests, while moving round the University to some selection locations which included the office of the Vice-Chancellor and the University Medical center.
